ABOUT THE TWELFTH POLISH CONGRESS OF PHILOSOPHY

The University of Łódź, Polish Philosophical Society and Committee on Philosophical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences invite professional philosophers as well as philosophy lovers from Poland and abroad to participate in the Twelfth Polish Congress of Philosophy, the biggest philosophical event in Poland. The Congress will take place from 11th to 16th September 2023 (on the centennial of the First Polish Congress of Philosophy organised in 1923 at the University of Lvov) in the bulding of the Faculty of Philology (Pomorska Street 171/173). One can get there from Fabryczna Railway Station and Kaliska Railway Station by taking the tram 12 or 18.

The organizers expect approximately 700 participants from all Polish universities and from abroad. The papers for thematic sections can be presented in Polish or English. The plenary lectures, debates, discussion panels and symposia will be mainly in Polish except for the plenary lecture of our special guest, prof. Husan Haack, which will be given in English. Moreover, the organizers plan simultaneous English translation of some main events. Strictly philosophical events will be accompanied by some cultural activities (a concert, performances, etc.).

See you in Łódź.

With kind regards

prof. Janusz Maciaszek
Director of the Institute of Philosophy
Chair of the Organizing Committee

ACCOMMODATION AND ALIMENTATION

For active participants of the Congress the organisers have prepared accommodation in dormitories of the University of Łódź, located on Lumumby Street, within 5-minute walking distance from the Faculty of Philology where the Congress will be held. There will be 200 places available – 100 places in single rooms and another 100 places in double rooms. Accommodation in dormitories can only be booked for the whole duration of the Congress, that is, for 5 days (from 11/12 September till 15/16 September). The fees for accommodation (for the entire duration of the Congress) in university dormitories are as follows:

  • single room: 555 zł
  • place in a double room: 415 zł.

We would like to inform that all single rooms have now been booked and only places in double rooms are still available. If a Congress participant wants to book accommodation in a university dormitory, they should tick an appropriate box in the registration form once it is open. Since the number of participants willing to book the university accommodation may exceed the number of available places, the places will be assigned based on the first come first served rule. Once the booking is confirmed by the organisers, the accommodation fee should be paid by a single transfer together with the conference fee (and together with the alimentation fee, if a participant books meals).

The dormitories are located in close proximity to the Faculty of Philology (where the Congress will be held), in the student campus called "Lumumbowo":

Participants who booked accommodation in double rooms, will be allotted a room in the STUDENT DORM NO. 2, while participants who booked a single room, will be allotted a place in the STUDENT DORMS NO. 2 and NO. 3.

Exact information about the number of the student dorm and room that a participant was allotted can be obtain upon check in or by sending a query to: tomasz.sieczkowski@uni.lodz.pl.

In all the dormitories there are kitchen suites which will be made available to the participants who booked accommodation therein. Moreover, in direct proximity to the campus and the Faculty of Philology there are several restaurants and cafes:

It is possible to book meals for the duration of the Congress. The full alimentation fee is 515 zł (it covers the gala dinner on the Congress opening day, that is, on the 11th September, and lunches and hot dinners between the 12th and 15th September). The prices of individual meals are as follows:

  • gala dinner: 75 zł
  • lunch: 55 zł
  • hot dinner: 55 zł.

The alimentation fee should be paid by a single transfer together with the conference fee (and together with the accommodation fee, if a participant has booked accommodation).

ABOUT ŁÓDŹ

Łódź is in the very centre of Poland, not far from Warsaw. It has an airport, served by budget airlines from London Stansted, London Luton, Brussels,

Dublin, Alicante, and Milan, 15 minutes away from the city centre by bus or taxi. It is very well connected to Warsaw and its two airports: Chopin and Modlin. There are direct buses from both airports to Łódź. There are regular direct trains from Warsaw Zachodnia and Warsaw Central Stations, both of which are connected to Chopin Airport by trains and buses. Travel by rail in Poland is comfortable, reliable and cheap. Łódź has several railway stations, of which Łódź Fabryczna is the most central one. It is less than 10 minutes away by foot from the Philosophy Department. Buses arrive at Łódź Kaliska, which is 15 minutes from the city centre by tram.

Łódź is a pleasant town and well worth a visit. It has an interesting industrial history and was called 'The Polish Manchester'. The Muzeum Sztuki (Museum of Art) houses an outstanding collection of modern and contemporary art, which has its roots in one of the world's oldest collections of this kind. There
are also a number of other museums dedicated to industrial history and heritage.

Joseph Roth's first novel Savoy Hotel is set in Łódź. The winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2018, Olga Tokarczuk, is not from Łódź, but the Polish Nobel Prize winner in 1924 Władysław Stanisław Reymont authored the novel The Promised Land also set in Łódź.
